A famous wine sale for charity
Nuits St Georges is a spicy, fruity red Burgundy wine based on Pinot Noir grape that can be excellent. Austria's signature white grape variety, rarely grown elsewhere. Traditionally it was not associated with high quality wine, but in recent years this variety has produced some excellent wines. Flavors include pepper, citrus fruits, and other fruits. Perhaps because it is acidic, Nuits St Georges wines are quite food friendly. Suggested food pairings include Veal Kidneys, Roast Game, and Chicken with Truffles.
You'll pay about $30 for a basic Nuits St Georges AOC wine such as from Louis Jadot, which tastes of red berries, dark stone fruits, earth, and spice. The tannins are quite present. There are dozens of Premiers crus (first growths). Spend another $10 or so to get Jadot's Aux Boudots with presumably finer structure and deeper tastes. In the $50 range you might try the Domaine de l'Arlot, Nuits Saint Georges 1er Clos de l'Arlot with lots of cherries and spices. This wine is long and silky.
