Orvieto winery in the center of Italy
Orvieto is a crisp, usually dry white wine from the Umbria region of central Italy. Suggested food pairings include Fettucine Alfredo and Boiled Shrimp.
Orvieto wine usually starts at about $10 but sometimes you can find it for a good deal less. A good choice in the $13-15 range is Tenuta Le Velette's Orvieto Classico tasting of lemon, lime, and apricot with hints of spice and almond. If you care to spend in the $17 range go for the La Carraia Orvieto Poggia Calvelli with fruits, toasted vanilla, and honey. And for about $40 go for the Cervaro della Sala from Antinori tasting of citrus, pineapples, and pears. Be warned, because of Italian wine law this mostly Chardonnay is not an Orvieto DOC wine but an Umbria IGT wine.
