What You Need To Know About Syrah Wine And Food

Syrah is the only red grape planted in the northern Rhône Valley. It is also grown in Argentina, South Africa and California, and is the signature red grape of Australia where it is known as Shiraz. Its bouquet usually includes white or black pepper, mulberries and blackcurrants, perhaps with a touch of tar. The taste also includes tannin and oak as well as those aromas. Syrah ages well. Syrah is a good accompaniment for Pizza, Pasta, Game, Duck and grilled and roasted red meats in general.

Syrah starts at about $10-12, but you probably can find some decent bottles for less. The Languedoc-Roussillon region of southwestern France has many fairly good Syrah wines at reasonable prices. Another place to look for fine Syrah is the northern Rhone Valley of southeastern France. By the way, as reviewed in my article I Love French Wine and Food - A Midi Syrah, I recently tasted a French Syrah costing about $13. Depending on what I was eating I tasted cherries, black fruit, pepper, and tobacco. All in all I was fairly pleased with this wine. Just so you know, my wine and food pairing reviews are not always positive. Crozes-Hermitage AOC is a interesting option (please note that two other grapes are allowed in the mix). While you can buy this wine in the $25 range, you should try Alain Graillot's version at about $30-35. There are lots and lots of flavors including bacon, olives, black licorice, cherries, and mint. These wines can be aged for about 6-12 years. For a real treat step up to the Hermitage AOC, one of France's great red wines. They start at about $150 but you will pay a lot more for a selected producer such as Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, whose family has been making these great wines since the fifteenth century.
